ANIMATION AND IMMERSIVE DESIGN EXPERIENCE
2023

Logo and icon created by Patrick Dimond

Within emerged from a collaborative effort of a branding project with Patrick Dimond, the designer who developed all branding guidelines that are followed in all projects connected to Within. Dimond developed all logos, icons, typeface, and color guidelines to be followed during the start-up stage of development for the brand.
From this partnership, the startup became fleshed out to become a whimsical virtual reality world that continued to develop. During development, a small portion of the worldbuilding was animated, rendered, and modeled what the virtual reality world would look like in real time. This was displayed through the use of a 3D animation that demonstrates a breathing cycle to the user that was displayed as an experiential design inside of a meditation space for a more accessible user experience.

Storyboarding the experience was the first step in development. Figuring out the breathing cycle to be used, how the environment’s motion would affect the user’s experience, and how long the experience should be were carefully thought through and developed during this stage.
Early development storyboards

From idea exploration to developing a virtual reality world eventually formed the need to learn the ins and outs of 3D software. Over the span of multiple months, it required many revisions to get the feeling of the VRT just right.

Late August Progress (texture refinement

After developments, renderings, and animations, the finalized animation was finally ready to have implemented branding, sound effects, and accompanying music. The final animation can be viewed through this video link.

To document what a viewing experience might look like for the animation, the Appalachian State University’s meditation room was occupied for an early morning to project the experience in the space. The projection could allow viewers to sit and observe the animation, follow the breathing pattern instructions on a large-scale form, and see the visuals of the world up close.
