Watauga Residential College

The Watauga Residential College (WRC) at Appalachian State University celebrated its 50th anniversary and were in need of a rebrand with promotional materials.

BRANDING
2022

The logo, which had been in place since the early 70s without much of a revamp, was in desperate need of modernization. The client wanted to retain a lot of the original design elements as the first iteration with an updated, cleaner feeling. From here, several iterations were developed of an updated logo and ideations for the shirt, hat, and color palettes.

Once an iteration idea became solidified by having the typography encircle the image, the original design was further edited and refined to a sun that can be featured with or without the title for greater flexibility.

The parameters were an updated logo based on the original design from the early 1970s with black and white and colored versions, a sticker design that was based on the original sign at the Living Learning Center, and a celebratory shirt design for students and alumni during the historic celebration.

Although the original intent for the client was to provide them with materials for the anniversary event, the client updated their social media using the newest logo. As a result of the new branding, the shirt designs at the anniversary event were so popular that they were shipped across the U.S. to alumni members who couldn’t make the anniversary event.
